Casa Design has returned from Milan’s Salone del Mobile 2017 with news of exciting launches from our vast roster of international brands. This year’s fair was one of the most impressive exhibitions to date, boasting a record number of programs, events, and exhibitors. Up-and-coming trends were evident: woven rope, belting, and fringe, richly-hued velvets, mobiles, mixed marbles, and tons of terrazzo! It would be impossible to recount every exciting design and detail, so we’ve narrowed it down to our “Top 10” favorite new designs from Milan Design Week 2017.
1. CALA SOFA by KETTAL
Luxury outdoor furniture maker
Kettal expands their popular Cala line by Doshi Levian with this new sofa. Hi-tech materials, a sultry color palette, and intricately woven rope detailing make this collection right on trend.
2. TAPE LIGHT by HENGE
Unveiled at a special exhibition space designed by Massimo Castagna and Yabu Pushelberg for Milan Design Week 2017,
Henge’s new Tape light by Castagna is an entrancing juxtaposition between organically bent wood and cutting-edge LED technology.
3. RAIL TABLE by ZEITRAUM
A unique and modular table system by up-and-coming, German design duo Kaschkasch, the
Rail table features under-mount locking levers that join each section of table and are surprisingly easy to use. 90-degree and 45-degree angle pieces allow the tables to snake and bend to fit freeform office spaces.
4. CHALICE LIGHT by MOOOI
Moooi’s exhibit in Via Tortona was one of the most showstopping events of Milan Design Week 2017. The brand presented a dozen new designs, but we were most taken with the new
Chalice light by Edward van Vliet. Chalice captures the essential grace of glass. Blossoms of 24 or 48 chalices define each lamp, diffusing light naturally and reflecting the floral pattern enclosed within each chalice.
5. GIO PONTI D.156.3 CHAIR by MOLTENI & C.
We love a bit of drama, and the relaunch of Gio Ponti’s D.156.3 Chair has it in spades. Not only does it whisper provocatively in black lacquer and Chinese red, the chair was unwittingly relaunched by two opposing design world giants (
Molteni & C and Cassina) in the same year. An unprecedented legal battle over exclusive manufacturing rights is underway. Its woven back made of high quality belting, as well as its graphic and angular silhouette, make it a design that is both on-trend and historically significant.
6. FILO LIGHT by FOSCARINI
This deconstructed table lamp is both uniquely decorative, featuring bright colors and Murano glass ornamentaion, and also industrial, reminiscent of temporary construction lighting. Designed by Andrea Anastasio for Foscarini, Filo comes in a rainbow of colors and is sure to be an editorial darling in the coming months.
7. COOKIES TABLE by GALLOTTI RADICE
Charmingly reminiscent of a black and white Oreo, Pietro Russo’s
Cookies tables are brand new for 2017. Bianco Statuario and Nero Marquinia marbles are joined by metal supports in black aluminum and brass to form this dynamic family of tables, which are available in three sizes.
8. BLUE CHAIR by BILLIANI
Francesco Faccin’s Blue chair for
Billiani is a lesson in simplicity and restraint. With a basic frame in stained or lacquered ashwood and an optionally upholstered seat, this newest design by Billiani is lightweight, stackable, and perfect for contract interiors.
9. OWEN TABLE by MERIDIANI
A pedestal table available in dining and lounge heights, the
Owen collection by Andrea Parisio is an icon in the making. Particularly stunning in full marble, the table is also offered in various wood finishes and lacquers. Although we didn’t see it at the show, the “bronzed brass lacquered wood” finish option sounds awfully intriguing.
10. “10TH” COLLECTION by EXTETA
In celebration of outdoor furniture manufactuer Exteta’s 10 year anniversary, designer Massimo Castagna has created the
“10th” collection – a cohesive group of luxury furnishings, lighting, and accessories meant to inspire the future of outdoor furniture design. Featuring innovative materials such as outdoor leather and lacquered wood, the Exteta booth was one of the highlights of iSalone 2017 and a brand we’ll surely be hearing more of.
